SUMMARY

Expliseat created the lightest seat available for passenger aircraft using carbon fibre tubes bonded to titanium to create  triple seat units that only weigh about 4Kg. The weight reduction in aircraft fitted with these seats can improve their fuel efficiency and performance, increasing profitablity for Airlines.

The brief for this design project was to add some comfort to the concept without adding much weight.

Much of the design work was focused on ergonomics and the upholstery construction, plastic moldings were avoided because they add weight. Each seat cover needed to be easily removed and fitted with hidden zips in case of damage. Elastomer was incorporated to hold the table in it’s up position, and to create a flexible magazine pocket all in the interest of saving weight.

The prototype ended up weighing just 1 more kilogram than the original Expliseat but looked and felt much more comfortable.
